Radiation Lab Field Pro

About this workbench

Radiation Field Pro is a browser workbench for characterising the reference X-ray and gamma radiation fields defined in ISO 4037. It is written for calibration laboratories, dosimetry services and instrument test houses that set up reference beams, check them against the standard and report the result with an uncertainty. Every calculation runs in your browser; nothing you enter is sent to a server.

What it computes

  • The tungsten-anode X-ray tube spectrum for a chosen tube voltage, inherent and added filtration and air path, with the mean energy and the effective energy of the beam.
  • First and second half-value layers in aluminium or copper, and the homogeneity coefficient h = HVL1 / HVL2.
  • Matching of the beam against the 50 radiation qualities of ISO 4037-1 (the L, N, W and H series), with the deviation from the tabulated values and a tolerance band.
  • The radionuclide gamma fields of caesium-137 and cobalt-60, including the air kerma rate from a point source.
  • Spectrum-averaged conversion coefficients from air kerma to the operational quantities Hp(10), H*(10) and H′(0.07), following ISO 4037-3.
  • Readout correction for air density from temperature and pressure, as described in ISO 4037-4.
  • An uncertainty budget in the manner of the GUM: repeat readings give the Type A component, certificates and other entries give Type B, and the expanded uncertainty is reported with its coverage factor.

How accurate it is

The model's first half-value layer is compared with the ISO 4037-1 table for all 50 qualities: every deviation is within 4% below 40 keV mean energy and within 2% above it. The conversion coefficients for caesium-137 and cobalt-60 agree with the ISO 4037-3 recommended values within 2%. These figures are generated from the engine code and enforced by its test suite; the full table is in the accuracy specification (a generated report, written in Korean). The workbench supports the measurements and quality procedures of a laboratory; it does not replace them: values for a real reference field are fixed by that facility's own measurements.

The Guide walks through the panels in order, Methods sets out every table and formula the engine uses, and Validation compares it with ISO 4037 quality by quality. Three worked examples carry real inputs to a result: an N-80 field for a survey-meter test, a Cs-137 field at 2.5 m and five chamber readings taken to a reported uncertainty. Who writes the workbench and where its limits lie is on the About page.

Radiation Field Pro is one of the pro workbenches of Radiation Lab, alongside RadiMeter for survey-meter type testing and M-Phreefiteq for radionuclide speciation and transport. The source code is on GitHub under the MIT licence: Source (MIT).
